Hemingway was born in 1899 as the second of six children. He grew up in Michigan. Then he was leader of „the lost generation“, which was a group of Americans who looked for an asylum especially in Paris. He was as a voluteer in Europe during the World War I.And during the Spanish Civil War he helped fighting against rising fascism. Hemingway lived also in Cuba, but when Fidel Castro started governing there, he went back to U.S.A.. By time he didn’t carry away by his loneliness and committed suicide in 1961. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954.
For Whom the Bell Tolls was inspired by Hemingway's experiences. This american’s novel from period of the Spanish Civil War is concentrated for 3 days living of Spanish lecturer- Robert Jordan. He is fighting as an american’s voluteer in the Spanish Civil War. The action in For Whom the Bell Tolls takes place in the woods surrounding the city of Segovia. Here Jordan associated to one of the guerilla‘s group. His challenge is blowing up a bridge,which should prevent coming of enemies in the time of layalist’s attack. During the preparing for the attack Jordan fall in love with daughter of murder layalist’s mayor –Maria. There’s also some problems with Pablo. Pablo is the leader of the guerillas. He makes difficulties for Jordan. He doesn’t trust in success this mission. Jordan doesn’t trust in it himself, but this is his challenge. He have to do it. Fortunately Jordan has Anselmo, which is Jordan's elderly guide and trusted friend and a good man.
In the end Anselmo is killed and Jordan is injured during the attack. His horse broke him his leg. He could not go. Maria wanted to stay with him and die with him. But Jordan persued her that she must live.
„The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it.“ Those are the words of Robert Jordan as he lies upon the hillside with the enemy closing in. In this time he knew that he had died.
For Whom the Bell Tolls is still celebrated not only as one of Hemingway's best, but also as one of the best war novels of all time.
